How to Become a GTM Engineer in 2026

A GTM (go-to-market) engineer builds the systems that sales, marketing and customer success teams use to find and win customers. The work is part RevOps, part data and part automation: CRM workflows, data pipelines, lead enrichment and, in many postings, LLM-based tools. The job suits people who like both business processes and writing code or building automations.

This is a young job title, so the number of postings is still small. A few patterns are clear:

  • Most postings name a CRM, usually Salesforce or HubSpot. Salesforce is the most common.
  • LLM skills are common. Many postings ask you to build automation with large language models.
  • Data tools appear often: a warehouse such as Snowflake, and tools such as dbt and Looker.
  • Entry-level roles are rare. Most postings want some experience, and many do not state a level at all.
  • Onsite and hybrid roles are more common than fully remote ones.
  • The US has most of the jobs. Other countries have few postings each.
  • Certificates are rarely asked for.

Step-by-step: how to get in

There is no licence, regulator or required exam for this job. Employers hire on proof that you can build working GTM systems. The steps below follow what the postings ask for.

  1. Learn one CRM in depth. Salesforce and HubSpot are the CRMs that postings name most often. Pick the one your target employers use. Learn objects, fields, workflows, reports and the API. Salesforce runs Trailhead, which says "Learn for free". HubSpot runs HubSpot Academy, which says its courses are "100% free & online" (checked October 2026). Salesforce also offers the Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam. Postings rarely ask for it, so treat it as optional. Project: build a lead routing rule in a free developer or trial account, with a report that shows where leads went.
  2. Learn SQL and one data warehouse. Snowflake, dbt and Looker in postings show that many teams expect you to move and model data, not only click in a CRM. Practise joins, aggregations and building a simple dashboard. Project: export CRM data to a warehouse table and build a dashboard of leads by source and stage.
  3. Learn to script and call APIs. Most GTM automations connect a CRM, an enrichment source and a messaging tool. Postings do not agree on one language, so pick Python or JavaScript, the language you can learn fastest. Learn to call a REST API, handle a webhook and retry a failed call. Project: a script that receives a new-lead webhook, looks up the company through an API and writes the result back to the CRM.
  4. Build with LLMs. LLM skills are among the most common asks. Build something real: a lead research agent, an email draft step, or a classifier that routes inbound leads. Show the prompt, the cost per run and how you check the output. Project: an LLM step that sorts 100 inbound leads into fit and no-fit, with a sample you checked by hand.
  5. Use a GTM data tool. Clay is one common choice in this space. Clay University offers courses and cohorts. When we checked in October 2026, it showed no prices, and new certification submissions were paused while Clay builds the next version. Project: an enrichment table that adds company size and industry to a lead list, with the share of rows it filled.
  6. Join the projects into one GTM system. Connect the pieces from steps 1–5: a new lead arrives, gets enriched, gets scored by the LLM step, and is routed in the CRM. Write one page on it: the sales problem, the tools, the cost per lead and a number such as "200 leads routed with no manual work". Postings rarely ask for a certificate, so this write-up is your main proof.
  7. Apply from an adjacent role first. Entry-level postings are rare, so the realistic path is an internal move or a switch from RevOps, sales ops, marketing ops, growth or software engineering. "Founding GTM Engineer" roles at startups expect you to work alone, so they suit people who already have that background.

Time and cost. We do not give a timeline, because it depends on where you start. The order matters more: do steps 1 to 6 in turn, one project per step. Skip the steps you already know: a RevOps person can usually start at step 3, and a software engineer at step 1 with the CRM. Cost by step: steps 1 and 2 can start at no cost, because Trailhead and HubSpot Academy are free. Step 5 can also start at no cost: Clay University shows no prices, and the Clay pricing page lists a free plan (500 actions a month, 200 rows per table) and a 14-day trial (checked October 2026). The Snowflake pricing page has a "start for free" sign-up; it does not state the trial terms, so check them when you sign up. Someone starting from zero should plan for a first job in an adjacent role, then the move.

Entry level

Entry roles are rare. If you find one, expect it to be close to sales ops or RevOps: keeping CRM data clean, building reports, setting up simple workflows. Employers want proof that you can use Salesforce or HubSpot and write basic SQL. Titles at this level include "Junior GTM Engineer" and intern or working student roles in GTM growth engineering.

Learn next: APIs, one scripting language and one LLM project you can show.

Mid level

Mid-level postings expect you to own systems. That means designing lead routing, building enrichment pipelines, syncing the CRM with the warehouse and shipping LLM-based automation. Most mid-level postings name Salesforce or HubSpot, and they usually ask for a few years of experience.

Learn next: data modelling with dbt, monitoring of automations, and how to measure the effect of what you build on the number of leads and deals.

Senior and staff level

Senior and staff postings add scope. You decide which tools the GTM team buys and how they connect. Director titles in GTM engineering show that the job also has a management track.

Learn next: how data moves between the CRM, the warehouse and the AI tools, and which system owns each field. Learn to compare the cost of an enrichment tool per lead with the cost of building the same step yourself. Learn to explain to a sales leader why a routing change will move leads between their reps.

Differences by country

The US has most of the jobs, and most pay data comes from US postings. Other countries, such as Germany, India, Canada, the UK and the Netherlands, have few postings each, so we cannot say how the role differs there. If you are outside the US, also check remote roles, but note that a remote posting may still be limited to certain countries.

Common mistakes

  • Building a demo with no sales result. A workflow that enriches 10 fake leads proves little. Show a number a sales leader cares about: hours saved per week, cost per enriched lead, or meetings booked from routed leads.
  • Learning only the CRM. Salesforce is the top tool, but LLM and data tools (Snowflake, dbt, Looker) appear often. With only CRM skills, employers will see you as a CRM admin. The warehouse and dbt side is covered in how to become a data engineer.
  • Showing an AI demo with no business result. Employers ask for LLM skills to save sales time or find better leads. Show the number, not only the prompt.
  • Aiming for "founding" roles too early. These roles expect you to build the whole GTM stack alone.
  • Ignoring onsite roles. Onsite and hybrid roles are more common than remote ones. If you search only for remote roles, you skip most postings.
